The Aerovane® Wind Vector Transmitter senses both wind speed and direction, but converts these measurements into two dc-voltage outputs, one proportional to the sine of the wind angle and the other proportional to the cosine. The outputs represent the X and Y components of the wind velocity. Since the source of these outputs is the wind driven dc-tachometer generator, no external power is necessary. Only three wires are necessary for transmission of the two signals, since one wire is common to both outputs.
The Model 5-122 is identical in dimension to the Model 120 Aerovane®. The direction transducer is a durable conductive film sine/cosine potentiometer.
This transmitter is purchased by the FAA. as NSN-N6660-01-130-8590 R and is used extensively as the sensor for Low Level Wind Shear detection systems at airports.
Additionally, the Aerovane® Wind Vectors are available equipped with thermostatically controlled heaters to prevent freezing of the impeller and direction vane during icing conditions to temperatures of -10° C (-14° F).
